Coloured Concrete on the Gold Coast: Essential Guide
- Full-Depth Integral Pigment vs Surface Shake: We exclusively pour full-depth integral coloured concrete. Synthetic iron oxide pigments are blended directly into the batch truck bowl, ensuring the color runs through the entire 100mm slab thickness so surface chips never reveal plain grey beneath.
- Popular Gold Coast Palettes: Deep Charcoal (matches Colorbond Monument), Bluestone Slate, French Vanilla, and Sandstone Beige (harmonizes with coastal dune landscapes).
- 2026 Pricing: Coloured concrete typically costs $85 to $120 per m² for supply and install, making it significantly more affordable than exposed aggregate while offering a crisp, modern aesthetic.
- UV Protection & Sealing: High UV levels in South East Queensland require two coats of high-solids solvent acrylic sealer with UV blockers applied after curing to lock in pigment vibrancy and prevent sun fading.

Choosing an integral concrete shade that matches your roof, fascia, or garage door elevates your home's exterior appeal:
Why Full-Depth Oxide Outlasts Surface-Hardener Shake
There are two primary methods for adding color to concrete: surface-shake color hardener and full-depth integral mixing.
Full-Depth Integral Pigment (The Gold Coast Standard)
Pure UV-stable mineral oxides are blended throughout the entire concrete volume at the batch plant. If your driveway gets chipped or gouged by a heavy tool, the colour is 100% identical all the way to the sub-base.
Surface Shake Colour Hardener (High Wear Risk)
Dry powder is thrown over plain grey concrete and trowelled into the top 1mm to 2mm. Over years of car tire friction and sun exposure, the thin colour layer wears through, exposing ugly plain grey patches.
How to Keep Coloured Concrete Vibrant for Years
Queensland's harsh UV rays and summer storms can cause unsealed colored concrete to fade over time:
The Concreters Sealing Routine:
- Initial Same-Day Evaporation Retarder: We mist aliphatic alcohol immediately after placing to prevent surface crusting and color mottling.
- 28-Day Curing Wait: Allow all mixing water to hydrate naturally before applying solvent sealers.
- Two-Coat UV Acrylic Sealer: Apply high-solids solvent acrylic sealer with anti-slip grit.
- Maintenance Recoat (Every 3 Years): A quick pressure wash and single maintenance coat of clear sealer every 3 years keeps the color looking brand new indefinitely.
Preventing "White Hazing" on Dark Charcoal & Monument Slabs
Dark oxide slabs absorb heat and show calcium salt efflorescence much more visibly than plain grey concrete. If ground moisture wicks up through the slab, it leaves a powdery white film across the charcoal surface.
We prevent this by installing a continuous 0.2mm high-impact polyethylene vapour barrier (builders plastic) beneath the slab with all seams taped. This stops subterranean moisture from carrying dissolved minerals to the top surface.
Fixing Cloudy or Milky Sealer (The Xylene Trick): If moisture ever gets trapped under an old acrylic sealer, it turns milky white. You do not need to grind the concrete off. A professional wash with pure xylene solvent re-liquefies the acrylic resin, releases the trapped vapor, and dries back to a crystal-clear, deep glossy finish.
Coloured Concrete FAQs
Q: How much does coloured concrete cost per square metre on the Gold Coast?
A: Supply and installation of full-depth integral coloured concrete generally ranges between $85 and $120 per m². This includes excavation, sub-base preparation, SL72/SL82 steel mesh, N25/N32 concrete with oxide pigment, saw-cut control joints, and two coats of UV sealer.
Q: Will dark charcoal concrete make my driveway too hot in summer?
A: Dark charcoal and Monument shades absorb more solar radiation, making them warmer under bare feet on 35°C days. For pool surrounds and uncovered patios where people walk barefoot, lighter mid-greys (Bluestone) or warm sand tones (French Vanilla) are much cooler.
Q: Can you colour an existing plain concrete driveway?
A: Yes. If your existing concrete is structurally sound, we can apply Covercrete concrete resurfacing (a polymer-modified coloured cement compound sprayed over the slab), available in identical Colorbond shades.
Q: Is coloured concrete slippery when wet?
A: We apply a directional broom texture across the wet concrete before it sets to create natural P4 slip resistance. When sealing, we also mix in micronized polymer anti-slip grip beads (SharkGrip) to ensure safe vehicle and pedestrian grip in wet weather.
Trade Colour Note — Gold Coast Concreting Network
"Colorbond Monument and Basalt are our most requested driveway shades across new estates in Pimpama, Coomera, and Robina. We always insist on full-depth integral oxides batched at the plant rather than cheap surface-shake powders. It ensures deep, permanent color that won't flake or reveal grey scratches when you drag a bin or park a heavy ute."
